According to an article in the Sweetwater Miner , March 24, , the trapper was killed by Indians before he could organize mining activities. A "gold rush" did not occur until July, when newspaper accounts picked up the discovery of the Carissa Lode.

The Chicago Times , under an Omaha dateline, reported on July Salt Lake papers of July 1, received here, give accounts of rich gold discoveries in the mines of that territory. By the time Ryan could report his discovery, a company under H. Reedall had registered the claim.
Modern view of South Pass City. On the left in the above view is the Carissa Saloon. The far corner of the saloon was caved in when in a motor grader ran into the building. The saloon was subsequently repaired and reopened in At one time, next door to the Carissa Saloon was the White Swan, a sporting parlor. Some of the "cribs" were located on the hill behind the White Swan.
The Carissa Saloon was originally constructed about The next building on the left side of the street is the Sherlock Store and post office constructed in The post office closed in The three buildings at the end of the street from the left are the Sherlock Hotel with the balcony , the Grecian Bend Saloon with the false front , the Exchange Bank the gabled one-story building , and the Recorder's office the shed roofed building attached to the bank , all of which have been restored in the above photo.
For older unrestored view, see next photo. The hotel was originally constructed in as the Idaho House. In it was sold to Janet Sherlock. The Exchange Bank was opened in by John W. Iliff, the cattle king, and Amos Steck , a former mayor of Denver. The bank closed in and in was converted to a saloon. The recorder's office was connected to the saloon and used as a gambling parlor.
Steck returned to Denver where he bacame one of the leading lawyers in Colorado, representing, among others, Augusta Pierce Tabor, in the scandalous divorce from Horace Tabor, the silver king, when Tabor became smitten with the former Mrs. Hiking Project can't be a complete community resource without keeping our trail information up to date. Between the years of through , South Pass would be used by approximately , emigrants heading west along the Oregon Trail on wagon trains, thus making South Pass one of the most important locations in the history of the Great American West. The days of the great wagon trains loaded with brave pioneers heading west were over.

One is a large granite boulder that was erected by Ezra Meeker in June of This historic crossing occurred on July 4, The marker honoring these two brave women was erected by Captain H.
Nickerson in Nickerson was the president of the Oregon Trail Commission of Wyoming, and he personally inscribed the 80 letters found on this historic marker. One year later South Pass City had over buildings and over 1, people inhabiting this booming Wyoming gold rush town. Known as "The City of Gold", there were of course hotels, saloons and other familiar businesses and establishments that one would expect to find in a western gold rush town. South Pass City was a thriving center of commerce during this period, and was the first of three other mining towns to be established in the South Pass area.

The entire South Pass mining area became known as the "Sweetwater Mining District", and was a lively and vibrant western gold rush metropolis But as the amount of gold found in the creeks began to diminish, and as the harsh winter weather made mining very difficult and miserable, and as rumors of new gold discoveries worked their way through the South Pass mining towns, the population of South Pass City dropped abruptly to only a few hundred people by And even though there were a few more "booms" in the area through the next 80 years, there was never a "boom" big enough or long-term enough to sustain a permanent, successful township.
South Pass City State Historic Site In , an organization known as Wyoming's 75 Anniversary Commission purchased South Pass City, which ensured that this historic town, along with it's colorful history, would be preserved through the ages. Soon after this purchase, South Pass City became designated a Wyoming State Historic Site, and through time South Pass City has become one of "the most accurately restored and authentically exhibited historic sites" found in the West. Of the 23 original structures that survived the ravage of time in South Pass City, 17 have been wonderfully restored, and contain a majority of the 30, artifacts found in their original structures.
Of course the most popular activity is taking the guided tour through each of the 17 restored buildings that contain thousands of the original artifacts found in this historic gold rush town. You can even test your skill at panning for gold on Willow Creek! There is also a three-mile long Volksmarch Trail which is great for wildlife viewing that includes antelope, mule deer, moose and more, as well as many bird species for those who enjoy bird watching.
